NBA 2K27 Shot Meter Boost Test
Turning the shot meter off has been worth a hidden boost for years, which we have tested each year. Some years the boost is marginal, while some years it is required to shoot well. 2K has let everyone know it will be back for 2K27. This is one of the first tests we do each year so we can let people know right away if they need to learn how to shoot with the meter off.
So let's get into what 2K says the boost is, and if our data reflects that number.
The claim we tested
The meter off boost is one of those things 2K lets us know is in the game each year but never gives any more information than that, until now. Mike Wang, the gameplay director on NBA 2K, was asked directly whether it survived into 2K27:

That is the claim. A 10% boost, unchanged from last year, for playing without the meter. What follows is what 1,600 shots say about it.
How we tested
Shots were taken on an automated testing station that holds the shot button for a set number of milliseconds and then releases it, so the release timing is fixed rather than judged by a human hand. That is the only way to run this test at all: a player who can see the meter times differently from one who cannot, and any comparison built on human releases measures the player rather than the setting.
Each sweep stepped through the green window in 5 millisecond increments, 100 attempts at every step, 8 steps per setting. Both sweeps used the same build, the same jumpshot and the same spot on the floor, shooting open, with no badges, hot zones or boosts in play. The only thing that changed between them was the shot meter.
The two sweeps are compared at equal distances from the center of their own windows rather than at equal hold times. Absolute hold time is a property of the run and the jumpshot it was measured on, and the figure everyone actually wants is about the shape of the window, which is what aligning on the center preserves.
What we found
Averaged across every release we tested, the meter off sweep makes 64.4% and the meter on sweep makes 54.4%. That is +10.0%, against a sampling margin of 4.4%. Wang said 10%. We got 10.0%. Now we are not exactly sure if he meant a 10% increase in the pure green window size or something else, but our test does cover what a real life scenario would look like. No one can perfectly time every shot, so we need to test throughout the potential green window, not just the center.
Then it gets interesting. Line the two sweeps up on the center of their own windows and split them at the peak, and the ten percent is nowhere near evenly spread:
- Early releases: no difference. Across the 2 cells before the peak, meter on makes 54.5% and meter off makes 53.5%. That is 1% apart, which is nothing.
- At the peak: no difference either. On the two cells at the center of the window, meter on makes 89% and meter off makes 84.5%. The meter is nominally ahead there, by 4.5% against a margin of 6.8% on 2 cells, so that is a tie and not a win. Either way the boost is not showing up on well timed shots.
- Late releases: all of it. Across the 4 cells past the peak, meter on falls to 37% while meter off holds 59.8%. That is +22.8% against a margin of 6.4%, and it is the whole effect.
So the boost is real, it is the size 2K said it was, and it is not what most players think it is. It does not make you green more often. It makes being late much cheaper.
The two windows, side by side
Both sweeps drawn against how far the release sat from the center of the window. If the boost were a flat 10% you would see one curve sitting above the other the whole way across. That is not what happened.
The raw numbers
Every cell we recorded, unsmoothed, so nothing above has to be taken on trust. 100 attempts each.

The meter also sped the shot up
One more thing that we were a little surprised by with the test. The meter on window sat at 643.5ms and the meter off window at 673.5ms, so with the meter on the shot went up 30ms sooner.
That is a long way in green window terms, and it is worth knowing before you switch. Turning the meter off does not only change your odds, it moves where your release is. Expect your first session without it to feel early.

What to do with this
This should be enough of a reason to try to learn to shoot without the meter. You could see a potential 10% jump in shooting percentages for the shots you slightly mistime.
Find your visual cue. Pick a moment in your jumpshot you can see on every rep, the set point, the ball passing your head, the top of the jump, and release on that. The cue is what replaces the meter, and it is the whole job. Most players who try meter off go back to it within a few games because they never picked one.
Give it a week before you judge it. Your timing gets worse before it gets better, but it will get better.
