NBA 2K27 Shooting Boost Test
Skill boosts have been in MyCAREER for years. They cost a bit of VC but at least this year 2K seems to be handing them out like candy. The Jump Shots boost promises to make your jumpers fall more often, but 2K has never said by how much.
So we measured it, the same way we measured the shot meter: same jumper, same spot, same hold times, with a boost active and without one. Here is what it is worth.
How we tested
Shots were taken on an automated testing station that holds the shot button for a set number of milliseconds and then releases it, so the release timing is fixed rather than judged by a human hand. Each test stepped through the green window in 5 millisecond increments from a 541ms hold to a 586ms hold, 200 attempts at every step, 10 steps per setting, 4,000 shots in all.
Both tests used the same build, the same jumpshot and the same spot on the floor, shooting open with no badges, hot zones or takeover in play. The only thing that changed between them was whether a Jump Shots skill boost was active. Both tests peaked on the same two hold times, 561ms and 566ms, so the boost did not move the window on the clock and the two runs can be compared at the same hold time directly.
What we found
Averaged across every release we tested, the boost test makes 57.6% and the no boost test makes 55.2%. That is +2.4%, against a sampling margin of 2.7%. So the honest reading is not "exactly 2.4". It is small: about 4.3% more makes than you would have had anyway, and close enough to the margin that a re-run could come back a point either side.
What makes us confident it is real at all is the direction. 9 of the 10 hold times came out ahead with the boost on, and the one that did not was the very last cell, deep in the late tail. A boost that did nothing would split those much closer to even.
Where the gain sits is worth a look, with the caveat that every band below is inside its own margin:
- Early releases: most of it. Across the 4 hold times before the peak, the boost makes 51.9% against 48.5%, 3.4 points ahead.
- At the peak: some. On the two hold times at the top of the window, 92.3% against 89.3%, 3 points ahead.
- Late releases: almost nothing. Across the 4 hold times past the peak, 46% against 44.9%, 1.1 points ahead, which is a tie.
That is the mirror image of the meter off boost, which lands entirely on late releases. In window terms the area under the boost curve is about 1.2ms wider, a millisecond of extra room on the early side of a window that measures about 28ms across this test. For scale, the meter off boost is 4.2 times bigger, and it costs nothing.
The two windows, side by side
Both tests on one pair of axes, in real hold time. If the boost were worth a lot you would see one curve sitting clearly above the other the whole way across. Instead the blue curve runs a touch above the orange one from the early tail through the peak and lands on top of it on the way down.

Every cell we recorded, unsmoothed, so nothing above has to be taken on trust. 200 attempts each.

What to do with this
The boosts are a solid way to increase your percentages, especially with how many free boosts we get this year.
It is still worth buying them if you play a lot of longer game modes like Rec, where they do not run out as quickly. If you exclusively play 2s or 3s they may run out too quickly, with too few attempts to be worth it.
