Release speed is one of the settings in your custom jumpshot creator which gives you a little control over how fast your jumpshot is. There are pros and cons to this setting. A quicker release gets the shot off against a closeout, reducing the contest of a defender, while a slower speed is supposed to give you more room to time it. This is how this mechanic has worked for years now. For the first time, 2K has told us roughly what that trade costs.

We wanted to take a look at exactly how much this setting slows or speeds up your shot and if the penalty for a faster shot is worth it. So we ran every setting: five tests, 100 shots a cell, 4,500 jump shots, one slider moved between them.

What 2K told us

Mike Wang, the gameplay director on NBA 2K, gave out a table of what each release speed does to the size of your green window. We have been carrying it on How to Shoot as his figures rather than ours ever since, waiting on this test:

Two things are worth noticing about that table before we check it. It is entirely about window size, and it stops being a number halfway down: the two slow settings get a direction and no figure. Both of those turn out to matter.

How we tested

Shots were taken on an automated testing station that holds the shot button for a set number of milliseconds and then releases it, so the release timing is fixed rather than judged by a human hand. That is the only way to run this test at all. Release speed changes what your jumpshot looks like, so a human tester relearns the animation between runs and ends up measuring their own practice.

Each test stepped through the green window in 5 millisecond increments, 100 attempts at every step, 45 cells in all. Same build, same jumpshot base and release, same spot on the floor, shooting open, with no badges, hot zones or boosts in play. The only thing that changed between the five runs was the release speed slider.

Watch the releases come apart as the timer runs: that gap is the 60ms this page is about, and it is the reason changing this setting means relearning your timing.

What we found

  • The window changes timing more than it changes size. The center window timings are 683.5, 703.5, 718.5, 728.5, 743.5ms as you go from Very Quick to Very Slow. That is 60ms end to end and about 15ms a notch. There is some overlap in the speeds: a later release on a Very Quick will be an earlier release on Quick.
  • Going quicker sacrifices some margin of error with your window size, and 2K's figures for it hold up. Very Quick came back at -12.1% against Normal and Quick at -8.5%, against the 10% and 5% the table quotes. Both of ours are a little worse than their figure but it is close enough to be inside our sampling margin.
  • Going slower did not measurably buy any back. Slow measured +1.1% against Normal and Very Slow the same. This means going slower than Normal is really just making you easier to contest.

Where the window went

All five tests on the same chart at their respective timing. Nothing is aligned or normalized here: this is where each setting's window actually sits.

Notch by notch, the hold that centers the window moves 20ms from Very Quick to Quick、15ms from Quick to Normal、10ms from Normal to Slow及15ms from Slow to Very Slow.

That is what makes changing this setting expensive in a way the size figures do not capture. Take one hold time, 721ms, which all three of the middle settings tested. On Normal it makes 94 out of 100. One notch quicker it makes 39. One notch slower it still makes 80. Same shot, same release, three settings.

Note which direction hurts. Going slower leaves you early on the new window, and being early is survivable: every one of these five tests falls off harder after its peak than before it. Going quicker leaves you late, which is the expensive side of all five. Either way this is not a setting you change on the way into a game.

How much window each setting buys

Now the part 2K did describe. Every setting against Normal, measured across the stretch all five tests share, with the figures from the table drawn on top.

Both quick settings came back a little worse than the table quotes, -12.1% against 10% and -8.5% against 5%, and both bars are longer than their own whiskers. Neither slow setting is: +1.1% and +1.1% against a whisker several times that. Whiskers are two standard errors on 100 shots a cell, so the bottom two rows are a boost we could not resolve rather than a boost we measured.

Measured figures are the mean make rate across the 17.5 milliseconds either side of each setting's own center, expressed as a percentage of Normal's. The margin is two standard errors on 100 shots a cell, in points of make rate, for that setting against Normal.

Nothing in the table is contradicted. Where 2K gave a number we landed close to it, a little worse on both quick settings and inside our margin either way, and the step from Quick to Very Quick is there and is about the size he describes. If you have been picking Quick to get most of the speed for less than the full penalty, that is roughly what we measured.

Where the table stops giving a number, so do we. “Small boost” is not a figure we can check, and at +1.1% against a margin four times that, the two slow settings are a bar shorter than its own error bar. That is worth saying plainly because it is the opposite of how release speed is usually discussed: the cost of going quick is real and measurable, and the reward for going slow, in window size, is not something 900 shots a setting could find.

Every cell we recorded, unsmoothed, so nothing above has to be taken on trust. 100 attempts each. A blank means that setting was not tested at that hold, not that it made nothing.

Hold is how long the shot button was held before it was released. Average is the whole column, every cell in it. Read the averages against each other with some care: the five tests sit at different places on the clock, so a column average puts a cell 2.5ms from that setting's peak in with one 22.5ms from it, and Normal's nine cells sit one step later relative to its own peak than everyone else's. The comparisons higher up the page line each test up on its own center first, which is what the window center column in the table above is for.

What to do with this

You have to decide between getting contested less or having a slightly bigger window. If you are a lower three ball build who only shoots wide open, it may be smarter to go Normal speed. On guards, you probably want at least Quick, if not Very Quick.

I would suggest trying Very Quick to start, and slowing it down notch by notch until you shoot more consistently.
